Who Runs the Barony?
As the Royalty perform mostly ceremonial duties, there is a slate of officers for each branch who are there to carry out the administrative duties. These officers serve in much the same manner as most social clubs. Some of the officers are:
This is the one that acts in a similar fashion as the President in any club or organization at the local level. The Seneschal holds meetings to conduct the business of scheduling and pre-planning of events, oversees the other local officers, and takes care of the other mundane 20th Century hassles.
The Marshal is in charge of all fighting activities and is the one to contact if you are interested in learning to fight or simply want to find out more about the sport. He/she can also start you on the path to good armor and tell you the basics of what is required of a fighter, including authorizations.
Within the Knight Marshallate office are several other officers who fields are other areas of S.C.A. activities: Rapier Fighting, Archery, and Equestrian Arts. If you are interested in these activities, you can go directly to the officer assigned.
This is the announcer. The Herald takes care of all the announcements that need to be made and represents the voice of the Crown. When the Herald speaks, please give your attention. What is said is usually of interest to all. Another function of this office includes helping people design medieval-style coats of arms (devices) for themselves.
MINISTER OF THE ARTS & SCIENCES:
This person will try to help you with any project that you have which involves any Medieval art or science. Sciences include anything from armor making to brewing mead. Arts include anything from arts and crafts like pottery and stained glass to music and dance. If he/she can't help personally, the Minister will find someone who can. As well as being a clearinghouse for information, this office is also involved in coordinating any competitions in the arts and sciences that are to be held.
The Treasurer is the person who is responsible for maintaining the financial records of the Barony. This person collects the subscription money for the Baronial Shaft, our Barony's newsletter.
The Chronicler supervises the publication activities of the Barony. The Baronial Shaft is their main responsibility. Please forward any public announcements, event announcements, chronicles of past event or arts and sciences articles to the Chronicler for inclusion in our local newsletter.
This person is the one who usually greets newcomers at events, loans costumes, has extra feast gear for loaning out and is a general first-source of information about what is going on. In some branches, this office is referred to as Gold Key.
MINISTER OF THE LISTS:
The Lists Officer is the one who registers fighters and runs the Lists during tournaments and wars. This person keeps records of the various fights within tournaments and has the rounds drawn by a member of the Royalty or Nobility officiating at the event.
The Chirurgeon (also referred to as a healer) is the person you will see bandaging wounds, minor cuts, insect bites, etc. The healer may well be a registered medic, but must at least be certified in general first aid. This person is responsible for providing first aid if needed, and provides health and safety education at events. Within the Outlands there is a waterbearers guild, which provides drinking water to the fighters and attendees at events; which is every helpful in our dry, hot climate.
The Quartermaster is responsible for the storage and inventory of our Baronial equipment -- pavillions, road signs, list fields, tables, etc.
The Sheriff is the one responsible for general security at events. Although it is the responsibility of all to be watchful of their own belongings at events, the Sheriff usually organizes teams of volunteers to patrol large events. This is more of a security measure to deter any trouble.
Please refer to the list of the current officers in the Barony of al-Barran and other contact people for more information.
