Alphabet Soup Explained

As you have been reading, you have learned about various titles and honors which members of the Society may earn. Some titles or honors are bestowed upon the victor of a specific tournament. There are may other awards of recognition for various services performed or talents displayed. One of the privileges of receiving an award is the right to place the initials of that award after your name. If you ever see someone's signature with a list of initials following it, you will realize why there is a need to explain this "alphabet soup"!

The initials for each award (not earned titles) are enclosed in parentheses after the name. Some you have already read about are: Court Baron/ess (CTBAR), Knight (KSCA), Master of Arms (MSCA), Order of the Laurel (ML), and Order of the Pelican (MP). Generally, where the initials begin with an 'M', the person is styled 'Master' or 'Mistress' of the Laurel, etc.; a 'C', 'Companion' of the Order of the Scorpion, etc.; a "'D', 'Defender' of the Stag's Blood, etc.; a 'B', 'Bearer' of the Cordon Royale, etc.

The Kingdom of the Outlands held its first Crown Tournament on June 14, 1986. Before that time, the Outlands was a Principality in the Kingdom of Atenveldt. We served as a Principality for more than eight years. Since many citizens of the Outlands were also members of the Principality, many awards and titles were earned during those years. These are still recognized but are no longer awarded in this Kingdom. Some of the awards given by either Atenveldt or the Principality of the Outlands are as follows:

  • Order of the Light of Atenveldt (CLA) -- Atenveldt: Kingdom service
  • Order of the Queen's Grace (QGA) -- Atenveldt: persons felt to portray courtliness, etc.
  • Order of the Queen's Cypher (QCA) -- Atenveldt: personal service to the Queen
  • Order of the Lion of Atenveldt (LOA) -- Atenveldt: those who exemplify the spirit of the Current Middle Ages
  • Order of the Fleur de Soleil (SOL) -- Atenveldt: Kingdom arts
  • Order of the Hawk's Lure (CHL) -- Atenveldt: Kingdom fighting
  • Order of the Stag's Tynes (CST) -- Principality: service
  • Order of the Leaping Stag (CLS) -- Principality: arts
  • Order of the Grail of Grace (CGG) -- Principality: personal service to the Princess
  • Order of the Dove (OD) -- Principality: for being a princess

There are other awards you may hear about. Remember that these awards may have been presented while the recipients were members of Atenveldt or another kingdom, and these people are recognized for those achievements in the Outlands as well.

The following is a list of the titles and awards that may be bestowed by the Crown to its citizens, a brief history, and a description of the badge or medallion symbolizing it.
